Thick smoke and fog cause multiple crashes on Interstate 75

South of Interstate 75 close to Gainesville, Florida a brush fire emitted thick smoke that drifted in the directions of drivers on both sides of the highway. This smoke, when merged with the pre-existing fog, blocked visibility for drivers.
The air became black and drivers were unable to see past their own windshields. People tried pulling over on the highway, but with the inability to see where they were, cars began to crash into one another. Several motor vehicles were hit from both the front and the back.
Emergency crews were also unable to navigate their way through the fog in order to tend to injured drivers and passengers. People were screaming and yelling, but no one could see them. Rescue workers were guided by their voices and administered the best medical care that they could. A total of 19 cars were involved in the wrecks, where 11 people lost their lives.
