Social Security Administration may have wrongly paid 1,500 people

Posted on Thursday, August 19th, 2010 at 7:07 am

According to a government audit of the Social Security Administration, the administration may have wrongly paid nearly 1,500 federal workers, but officials from Social Security are disputing this accusation.

Workers are eligible for Social Security Disability if they are injured and earn less than the levels put in place by the program. Investigators with the Government Accountability Office reviewed payroll from federal employees along with data from the Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Insurance program.

Nearly 7,000 federal employees received disability benefits while on the government’s payroll in 2008 and 1,500 received improper payments. The fraudulent payments are equal to $1.7 million each month, but details of exact payments will be determined after the investigation.
