Families stress due to delay of Social Security disability

A 47-year-old mother is suffering from fibromyalgia, a degenerative disc disease, and needs a knee replacement. She filed for Social Security Disability Insurance in 2006 and she thought that she would be waiting for six months.
After the first filing, she was denied several times and because of the economic downturn and aging baby boomers, she waited for months. Social Security anticipates receiving 3.3 million disability claims, up 37 percent from 2008. Areas of California who are seeing a backlog in applications are expecting over a 400-day wait for claims to be processed.
